Jeff Koons designs Mouton Rothschild wine label
Artist follows in the footsteps of Francis Bacon, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Picasso
Jeff Koons has been enlisted to create the label for Château Mouton Rothschild’s 2010 Pauillac first growth. Koons joins a short list of illustrious artists to have had the same honour bestowed upon them since 1945, among them Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, Picasso and Salvador Dalí.
Owner and art lover Baroness Phillippine de Rothschild personally commissioned Koons to create the artwork. Koons used a Pompeii fresco of the Birth of Venus as the basis of his label art, adding a line drawing of a ship sailing under the sun.
The Drinks Business blog states that the Bordeaux itself was made with “small, rich, naturally concentrated grapes both high in colour and natural acidity. Hallmarks of the vintage are apparently its length, elegance and harmony.”
