Thierry Mugler joins the stars at his museum opening
The designer welcomed fashion stars both past and present for the VIP opening of his museum retrospective
Sometimes fashion benefits for being laid down in the archives for a few years. When Thierry Mugler welcomed guests to the VIP preview of Thierry Mugler Couturissime at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, many of them picked out vintage items from the designer’s archives, and they all looked amazing.
Kim Kardashain West wore an outfit from the designer’s Les méduses collection, dating from 1999-2000, and (following a brief wardrobe change); a dress from his 1994 Longchamps collection.
His erstwhile muse, the US model Pat Cleveland, picked out something from Mugler’s Les aviateuses collection (1987-88); while other attendees, including the US gender-fluid performer Violet Chachki and the president of Mugler fashion and perfume, Sandrine Groslier Douhet, picked out pieces from these and other bygone collections, including Les Infernales, also from 1987-1988.
Behind the scenes, Mugler dug into the show a little more, via Instagram stories, picking out garments of particular note, such as his La Chimère gown from the late 1990s, and his 1992 Motorcyle-fairing bustier; as well as revealing little-known details about the show, such Couturissime’s mannequin masks were painted by his long-time collaborator, the Italian designer and artist Stefano Canulli.
