Martin Parr's pictures come to life in London!
Dover Street Market stages an installation to launch Parr’s new book Only Human
While Martin Parr’s photographs have captured life in Britain with striking clarity, you’re unlikely to see all sides of the country’s cultural identity on the well-heeled streets of Mayfair, where upmarket sushi restaurants often outnumber ice cream vans.
Nevertheless, scenes from Parr’s classic shots –including familiar faces from his 1980s British beach photo stories, as well as more recent photos - were brought to life in London a few days ago, when Dover Street Market launched its new Martin Parr installation last Thursday.
The Only Human installation, which opened last Thursday, coincides with Parr’s National Portrait Gallery show and the publication of his new book, Only Human: Photographs by Martin Parr. Martin himself dropped by the store on Dover Street in Mayfair, West London, to sign books, chat with guests, and admire the cut-outs, models and props, all inspired by his wonderful photography.
This exhibition, which runs until Thursday 21 March, was co-produced by The Art of Dining, the high-concept, fine-art-meets-food catering company founded by Martin’s daughter, chef Ellen Parr. and the set designer Alice Hodge.
There may have been a March chill in the air, but they served pasties and slushies at the opening – the perfect combination to accompany any of Martin’s British beach imagery.
You can catch the show in London over the next few days, and to see more images made by Parr over the years you can order Only Human: Photographs by Martin Parr in our store.
There are signed copies available, and Collector’s Editions with a signed and numbered print.
